A dog's ear canal goes deep into the head structure. Fresh air must be able to penetrate deep enough to keep the ear canal dry. With excess moisture, bacteria can grow, causing odors and infections. An experienced groomer can remove dirt and overgrown hair blocking the ear canal.

Animal fur, like human hair, grows from follicles in the skin. Fur covered in oils and dirt can become tangled. Neglected tangles can increase in size and tightness forming mats. Fur contained in mats pull on the follicles clumping the skin and causes pain.
Conditioners and frequent brushing help prevent tangles and mats. However, once formed, mats are removed in a dematting process using specialized tools. Severe mats may have to be shaved to remedy.
Brushing also has a bonding effect. Spending the time to brush your pet shows you care for them and they enjoy the attention.

Fleas like dark areas and can hide in cracks, rugs and furniture. If your pet has fleas you may have to fumigate your house twice to prevent reinfestation. The fumigation does not kill the eggs and the second fumigation must be done before the existing eggs become adults that will lay more eggs.
Cheyletiella also known as walking dandruff is a mite that resembles dry flakes of skin. While Cheyletiella is not usually found on humans, they can bite people. The bite is not dangerous but can resemble bites from a black fly which is very itchcy and can become sore.
